Magnetometer are the onboard instruments mostly used in exploration and observation satellites. This instrument was made available after the discovery of Val Allen belt around the Earth by Explorer-1. This instrument was used for the detailed study of magnetic fields of Earth, Moon, Sun, Mars, Venus and other planets.
The first spacecraft in which magnetometer was installed was Sputnik-3 spacecraft in 1958 and the most detailed observation of Earth magnetic field was performed by the Magsat & Orsted satellites.
Spacecraft magnetometers are of three type, they are
