Jupiter Facts

Jupiter:

      Jupiter is the fifth planet from the Sun and it was named after the Roman god of King. It is the largest planet in our solar system. It almost equals to 317 times the mass of the Earth. 

Facts about Jupiter:
  • Jupiter was first sighted by ancient Babylonians in around 7th Century
  • It was only planet to prove the earth was not center after the discovery of four moons of Jupiter by Galileo in 1610
  • Jupiter has the shortest day of the eight planets
  • One orbit of the Sun takes around 11.86 Earth Years
  • Jupiter has faint ring system around it above the clouds (92,000 km)
  • Jupiter has 63 confirmed moons around it
  • The largest of Jupiter's moon, Ganymede is the largest moon in the solar system
  • Jupiter has very strong magnetic field - As it swallowed a comet once 
  • Jupiter is the fourth brightest object in our solar system
  • Jupiter has very unique cloud layer of ammonia & sulphur
  • Eight spacecraft have visited Jupiter - Pioneer 10 &11 |  Voyager 1 & 2 | Galileo | Cassini | Ulysses | New Horizon and Juno
  • Jupiter does not experience seasons like other planets - Earth & Mars
  • Jupiter's great Red Spot is an enormous storm that has been raging for 300 years
  • Juno is currently active spacecraft around Jupiter
