Jugnu Satellite

Jugnu Satellite:

Jugnu is a technology demonstration and remote sensing (Cubesat) nanosatellite designed and developed by Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur under the guidance of Indian Space Research Organisation.

Purpose :
  • The satellite is intended to provide data for agriculture and disaster monitoring
  • To provide the indigenously developed camera system for imaging the Earth in the near infrared region and test image processing algorithms.
  • Evaluate Global Positioning System receiver for its use in satellite navigation
  • Test indigenously developed MEMS based Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU) in space.
Design:

It is a 3 kg satellite and its development programme cost is 25 crore rupee. It was designed to operate a life period of One year.

Launch:

Jugnu satellite was launched on 12th October 2011 into low Earth orbit by Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV-CA-C18). The launch was performed in Satish Dhawan - the first launch pad in Satish Dhawan Space Center, Andhra Pradesh.

Scientific Instruments:
  1. NIRC  - Near Infrared Camera
  2. GPS   - Global Positioning System
  3. ADCS - Attitude Determination and Control System
  4. TCS    - Thermal Control System
  5. IMU     -  Inertial Measurement Unit
Scientific Objectives:
  • To initiate research activities towards development of Nanosatellites
  • Test for cheap and best effective spacecrafts in future
  • To set the path for future up gradations and study such validation concepts for possible up gradations
Long-Term Objectives:
  • To develop design for usage of micro-satellites
  • Complement the development efforts of India's Satellite application requirements through technology development and validation at micro satellite level
  • Develop and training of human resources
  • Strengthen activities in MEMS sensor based technology applications
